1911 Philadelphia Sign Company is launched when 18-year old Andrew Paxson Trucksess purchases a sign business for $500., with assistance from his father. The company’s original signs are hand-painted placards delivered by pushcart, created in a 6,000 square foot location on Randolph Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
1915 French engineer, Georges Claude, is issued the first US patent for neon lighting.
1917 Andrew Trucksess is drafted as US enters WW1. Trucksess uses his painting skills to camouflage ships for the Navy in Newport News, VA.
1919 The war ends. Trucksess returns to resume his sign business.
1922 Philadelphia Sign outgrows its original location and moves into a 12,000 square foot facility on 305 Brown Street, Philadelphia.
1923 Georges Claude introduces neon signage to the United States with an installation at a car dealership.
1925 Philadelphia Sign is an early licensee of Claude Neon. The company grows to employ 100 people, creating 90% of theatre marquees in a four state area.
1926 Philadelphia Sign builds an 80-foot replica of the Liberty Bell for the Philadelphia Sesqui-Centennial Exposition. Covered in 26,000 light bulbs the replica is centrally located at the gateway to the festival. The exposition celebrated the 150th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence, and the 50th anniversary of the 1876 Centennial Exposition.
1935 The nation and US industry are challenged by the Great Depression. At the height of the financial crisis, growth is at a standstill and staff is reduced to a handful of employees. Though the company is tested, Philadelphia Sign successfully weathers the economic storm.
1937 Philadelphia Sign begins its first production work, manufacturing signs in multiple for Atlantic Refining Company gasoline stations on the East Coast. Both the company and the country continue to recover.
1938 Neon sign’s popularity grows throughout the 30’s.
1941 US enters WW2 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Sign production is halted for the duration of the war. Philadelphia Sign contributes to the war effort, producing guard houses equipped with searchlights, thousands of washing machines for the Navy and Merchant Marines, and gun shields for Navy war ships.
1946 Post-war demand for signage is high. Neon signage dominates the landscape, illuminating most US downtown areas.
1955 Signs grow taller and pylons become more popular on roadways. Philadelphia Sign purchases their first boom truck for $20,000.
1956 Production is on the rise. The company fabricates signs for multiple location companies like Penny’s, A&P Markets and Acme Supermarkets throughout the East Coast.
1957 Philadelphia Sign creates iconic signage for NABISCO buildings in Philadelphia and Chicago.
1958 Philadelphia Sign develops DYNAD, a trademarked and patented new ‘animated’ sign technology using lenticular images.
1962 Philadelphia Sign expands, opening the Palmyra, New Jersey plant, bringing square footage to 34,000. While the Philadelphia location continues doing custom work, the new location provides much needed space for increased production work.
1964 Philadelphia Sign benefits from the rise in popularity of restaurant and fast food chains.
1969 Invention of the ATM, a technology that will transform banking.

The centerpiece of our green initiative is our new solar energy installation. One of the largest solar projects in the state of New Jersey, we are the first sign manufacturer in the country to fabricate our signs using renewable solar energy.
In 2010, Philadelphia Sign channeled a century of engineering innovations and project management expertise into this pioneer project. The decision to pursue a renewable energy option was made after realizing both the potential cost savings and the positive environmental impact of a solar installation. After extensive research, an internal team of company project managers, engineers and installers underwent necessary training. Construction began with the installation of a 225,000 square foot insulated, reflective roofing system installed atop the Pennsauken facility. Next, 6,000 stainless steel angled racks were mounted on the roof to secure the 4,790 MAGE solar panels. The $4.5 million turnkey solar power system was completed by the end of 2010. The new 910 kilowatt solar installation is capable of generating 1.1 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually, enough energy to power 900 homes. And, each year the solar panels will offset enough carbon pollution equivalent to 4,700 acres of trees.
